Definition of Allergens

Allergens are substances that trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. These substances can include:

  • Foods
  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Chemicals
  • Among others

When an allergic person comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system reacts in an exaggerated way, releasing histamines and other chemicals that cause symptoms such as itching, sneezing, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, skin rashes, among others.

It is important to identify the specific allergens to which a person is sensitive in order to avoid exposure and manage allergic symptoms.
