Obesity

Definition of Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition in which a person accumulates excess body fat that can have negative effects on their health, including increasing inflammation levels and predisposing them to chronic non-communicable diseases such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Certain types of cancer

It is characterized by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher and can be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

The treatment of obesity typically involves changes in diet, increased physical activity, and, in some cases, medication or surgery.
