Inflammation

Definition of Inflammation

Inflammation is a response of the immune system. It is a process that is part of the body's defense response, aimed at eliminating the harmful agent and promoting the repair of damaged tissues.

Inflammation can be acute, when it lasts for a short time, or chronic, when it persists for an extended period due to injury, infection, or difficult-to-digest harmful foods.

It is characterized not only by swelling, redness, heat, and pain in the affected area but also by the loss of function of a tissue or by chemical and metabolic changes that can translate into chronic diseases of the 21st century.
